The Future of Coffee is at Risk
Coffee is among the most traded and consumed commodities in the world and is only second to water in beverage consumption. Coffee production supports 125 million people along the supply chain. Millions of smallholder coffee farmers produce 80% of the coffee consumed globally but are unable to earn a reliable income from coffee production alone.
The livelihoods of coffee farmers, and those along the coffee supply chain, are presently threatened by climate change, diseases and pests, low crop yields, and barriers to quality. To guarantee the supply of coffee for generations to come, as well as the livelihoods of farmers, both industry partners and farmers must collaborate to find sustainable solutions that are founded on scientific research and development.
